Vertically differentiated products in a competitive market often share common attributes (e.g., location value, infrastructure, or technologies) provided by third-parties. In this study, we characterize how common attributes affect high- and low-quality firms in their offerings of individual attributes and pricing, and consequently affect market competition and social welfare. First, we disentangle three distinctive effects of common attributes on vertical competition, and identify a “bottom-up” influence through which common attributes affect the low-quality firm greater than the high-quality firm. Second, we show that more desirable common attributes have different implications for vertical competition in different product markets. Finally, we examine a retail platform’s commission policy when its infrastructure constitutes common attributes for vertically differentiated vendors, and identify a “top-down” influence through which the commission policy affects the high-quality firm greater than the low-quality firm in moderating the impact of common attributes.

李娟，南京大學(xué)工程偉德國(guó)際1946bv官網(wǎng)教授，博導(dǎo)。主要研究領(lǐng)域?yàn)樾袨檫\(yùn)營(yíng)管理、供應(yīng)鏈與物流管理。她的研究工作主要發(fā)表于Decision Science, European Journal of Operations Research, International Journal of Production Economics, International Journal of Production Research，管理科學(xué)學(xué)報(bào)等學(xué)術(shù)期刊。她指導(dǎo)的學(xué)生的研究工作分別獲得2019年和2020行為運(yùn)籌學(xué)與行為運(yùn)營(yíng)管理研討會(huì)優(yōu)秀學(xué)生論文。她還出版了4本與學(xué)術(shù)研究相關(guān)的普及讀物，其中一本獲得江蘇省第15屆哲學(xué)社會(huì)科學(xué)優(yōu)秀成果獎(jiǎng)（普及成果獎(jiǎng)）。她主持國(guó)家自然科學(xué)基金項(xiàng)目4項(xiàng)，被評(píng)為《系統(tǒng)管理學(xué)報(bào)》2021-2022年度優(yōu)秀審稿人，現(xiàn)任中國(guó)運(yùn)籌學(xué)會(huì)行為運(yùn)籌與管理分會(huì)理事。
