  題目1:Demand side and supply side energy modelling and optimisation case studies

  In this presentation, I will present two energy modelling and optimisation case studies. One case study focuses on design of optimal load scheduling strategies for multiple domestic electric water heaters. And the other case study aims to identify the optimal maintenance/cleaning plan for solar panels of the solar photovoltaic plant.  In the first study, we develop an algorithm to identify optimal switching operations for multiple water heating systems with careful considerations of users’ comfort levels, time-of-use tariff, and peak demand reduction. We also restrict the maximum number of systems working simultaneously to avoid unexpected peak demand after load scheduling. The proposed algorithm has been applied to identify the best switching time for 10 EWH units for peak reduction whilst minimising users’ discomfort levels. Simulation results demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. In the second study, partial shading effects of a large-scale solar farm have been carefully modelled using a bottom up approach. In order to reduce the partial shading effects and maintain the solar farm’s power output, an optimisation problem is formulated to identify the optimal cleaning plan to clean the dusty solar panels. Optimal solutions to the problem provide the optimal cleaning plan in terms of minimum cleaning cost, maximised power output, and schedules of the maintenance.

  Dr. Xianming Ye is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, University of Pretoria, South Africa. Dr. Ye received his BEng and MEng degrees in the Department of Automation, Wuhan University, China in 2008 and 2010, respectively. He completed his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pretoria in 2015, where he conducted research on the design of optimal measurement and verification strategies for the national energy efficiency and demand side management (EEDSM) programme at the Centre of New Energy Systems (CNES). He is a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) since 2011. His research interests focus on building energy management, measurement and verification of energy savings, energy modelling and energy optimisation, microgrid and renewable energy systems.

  題目2:Control engineering perspective of vehicular dynamics and energy systems

  Control is an invisible science that penetrates our everyday life, from smartphones to public facilities and the beyond. This talk will give a brief summary of the presenter’s work on applying control engineering techniques to vehicular systems including railway freight trains and electric vehicles in particular. Vehicle control falls within the broad field of “control of movement systems” or mechatronics, which entails not only propulsion control but also the management of energy utilisation and environmental impact minimisation in the era of energy and environmental crisis. This brings about new challenges for control engineers in the design of effective vehicle movement control strategies that are energy and emission aware. The controller designed must be able to meet the motion requirements of the vehicle and at the same time conserve energy resources and mitigate environmental footprints. Starting from energy-efficient operation control of freight trains, this talk will go through some typical problems of vehicle control including speed profiling, tracking and energy consumption minimisation and end with some further applications of similar control and optimisation methods to micro-scale power systems.

  Dr Lijun Zhang is a senior lecturer at the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where he is also a Junior Chair on Energy Efficiency funded by Exxaro. He obtained his PhD degree from the University of Pretoria in 2016 and his MEng and BEng degrees from the Wuhan University in 2012 and 2010, respectively. He is a SANAS accredited technical signatory for the measurement and verification of energy savings and an ECSA registered professional engineer. His research interests include energy modelling, optimisation and control system design for industrial processes, heavy haul trains, electric vehicles, building energy systems, micro-grids etc.
